music_selection_top_15_2014In a few hours we will be in 2015 and we will look back to 2014. It was an interesting year again with a bunch of newcomers, remixes and of course summer hits. You’d like to know which one were my favorites?

#1: Faul & Wad Ad vs. Pnau – Changes

Oh yes, the French Touch was again very present this year, especially with Faul & Wad, a Parisian electro-duo. They’ve actually remixed an “old” Australian track. And Gran Turismo 5 – fans will definitely know this track, because it’s played during the pre-race sequence.

#2: Lilly Wood and the Prick – Prayer in C (Robin Schulz Remix)

Lilly Wood and the Prick is a French band. One day they got a call from Robin Schulz for clearing some details about the usage of “Prayer in C” released a few years ago. The answer was positive and the reaction of the people towards this song was overwhelming: #1 Hit in Germany, France and all over Europe!

#3: Fakear

Fakear is a French guy who uses an MPC to compose his electro tracks: a mix of break beats, slowdown tempo subtly combined with artificially slow down electro samples. He’s a newcomer in the electro scene and you’ll directly recognize him because of his very special beats. I’m pretty sure he’ll become very famous in 2015.

#4: Banks

Banks is one of my favorite singer this year. Her songs can be described as a mix between Timbaland, Aaliyah and very deep R&B. It’s fresh, new and sometimes a little bit strange.

#5: Pharell Williams – Happy

This is definitely the song of 2014! After being successful with two French helmet-wearers, Pharell Williams wrote one soundtrack for the movie Despicable Me 2 and launched the highly creative with the world wide’s first 24 hour video clip.

#6: Highasakite

I wrote this summer a small article about this group. Personally an underrated group with beautiful tracks and a real Nordic-folk spirit in the voice of the lead singer Ingrid Helene Håvik.

#7:  Sia – Chandelier

Don’t try to analyze or understand Sia’s lyrics: it’s about hanging from a chandelier, perhaps as impressive as swinging on a wrecking ball. The video clip is a real jewel of dance.

#8: Traum – Cro

Cro is a famous rapper in Germany because he is wearing a panda bear mask. Enough to be really cool? No, this year he released a smashing hit “Traum” and of course here’s the clip featuring Frank Elstner.

#9: Sonnentanz / Netzwerk – Klangkarusell

This summer, the Austrian’s smashing hits “Sonnentanz” and “Netzwerk (Feels like Rain”) had to be on every good DJ’s playlist. Why? Check these two video clips and you will understand … and dance 😉

#10: Rise Like a Phoenix – Conchita Wurst

I thought that with Lady Gaga we had our fashion-pop icon: no way! This year during the European Song Contest (ESC) Europe and the World discovered Conchita Wurst, a bearded-diva that sung a James Bond Soundtrack – like song “Rise Like a Phoenix”. After singing the ballad, (s)he won the contest. Definitely one of the major performances this year and perhaps also a political message?

#11: David Guetta – Lovers On The Sun ft. Sam Martin

If you want it or not, David was back again this year with his late summer hit “Lovers On The Sun”. Definitely a curious mix between western clichés and pure guettaesque electro music. Enio Morricone would certainly been surprised by this curious combination.

#13: Atemlos – Helene Fischer

If you have visited Germany right after the World Cup, it’s impossible not to have encountered the face of Helene Fischer on magazines. She sung her #1 hit with the whole victorious German Soccer Team in front of the Brandenburg Gate. And don’t ask Germans if this is their favorite song, because they can’t hear it anymore!

Actually there are also some legal issues concerning this song, because apparently it was highly inspired by “Lands of Dreams” by Roseanne Cash

What do you think? IMO Helene’s version IS a copy, as over 50% of the melody sounds the same as “Lands of Dreams” 😉

#13: Shakira – La La La (Brazil 2014) ft. Carlinhos Brown

Take a little bit of football stadium feeling, a few drums, some nice Brazilian girls dancing, some famous football players and put them into a video clip featuring Shakira: you will get a worldwide summer hit.

#14: Lana Del Rey – Ultraviolence

Before releasing her fourth album next year, Lana released last June a very discrete album called “Ultraviolence”. I really apprecitated this album and wrote a small review about it this summer.

#15: Poom – Les Voiles

I hope you enjoyed this top #15 of 2014’s best tracks/artists. If you are tired of listening to the original versions of these tracks, why not listening to the Best Of Bootie 2014 compilation?
